The GDPR, which will go into effect at the end of May, is not just intended to replace existing data privacy laws and harmonize the rules across the European countries but it is expressly intended to “...reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy.” (https://www.eugdpr.org) and how personal data has to be handled by companies. It does not just apply to entities located within the EU but to everyone who collects, uses and processes personal data from EU citizens. Personal data is defined quite broadly as “any information which may be used to identify a natural person directly or indirectly”.
